More football players from Iowa and Iowa State place their own bets

In the state of Iowa, dominoes keep falling one after another. State investigators charged four football players from Iowa State and three from the University of Iowa in a sports gambling investigation. Iowa State defensive tackle Isaiah Lee was charged with betting against his own team.
Jirehl Brock, Lee, DeShawn Hanika, Jake Remsburg, and Jirehl Brock of Iowa State's football team were named in the most recent gambling complaint submitted on Thursday by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (IDCI).

On Thursday, the IDCI also filed charges against Iowa wide receiver Jack Johnson, two former Iowa players, safety Reggie Bracy and wide receiver Arland Bruce IV.

For allegedly hiding their identity in online gambling activities, all seven student-athletes are accused of tampering with records. In Iowa, a misdemeanor conviction carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine between $855 and $8,540.

Owen O'Brien, a student manager for the Iowa football team, was also accused in the investigation.

Numerous student-athletes from colleges in the state of Iowa were under investigation for violating the NCAA's gambling policy, the NCAA announced in May.

The NCAA's gambling policies were recently updated. Student-athletes who bet on their own sports or on other sports played at their own school risk losing their eligibility permanently.

Bracy, Bruce, and Johnson Play Iowa Games.
Johnson, a wide receiver for Iowa, was under investigation for betting at DraftKings using a mother-created account. While underage, he placed 380 wagers, including two bets on non-playing football games in Iowa.

Bruce, an Iowa starting wide receiver, bet 132 times. Eleven of those wagers, including one on the total number of points to be under, were placed on games he participated in.

Bracy placed 66 bets worth a total of $715. However, two of them were wagers on games that he participated in, against South Dakota State and Michigan. When they made bets on an account belonging to a member of Bruce's family, Bruce and Bracy were both underage.  In the offseason, Bruce moved to Oklahoma State. At the conclusion of the previous campaign, Bracy left Iowa for Troy and entered the transfer portal.

O'Brien used his mother's FanDuel account to place 350 wagers while serving as the Hawkeyes' well-liked student manager. He placed all of the bets while still a minor, and at least three of them were on Iowa football games.

Isaiah Lee staked Iowa State off.

The Cyclones' leading rusher last year was Brock, the starting running back for Iowa State. He accrued 558 yards from scrimmage and tallied four touchdowns in total.

Brock used a friend's name and account to place 1,327 bets totaling more than $12,000. Brock placed bets on 13 basketball contests for Iowa State and at least three football contests in which he participated. In those games, rival Iowa, Texas Tech, and Kansas State served as opponents.

Chicago defensive lineman Lee used his fiance's FanDuel account to make bets. He placed 21 bets, 12 of which were on Iowa State games, where he competed in his sophomore and junior years. He faded Iowa State against Texas, a +6 road underdog, so at least one wager was against his own team. Lee lost his wager on the game despite making one tackle in Iowa State's 30-7 victory over Texas.

This season, Hanika was vying for the starting tight end position. Hanika made a total of 288 wagers at DraftKings using his mother's account, including 70 on Iowa State basketball games. Hanika never placed a wager on a college football game.

The offensive lineman Remsburg also made use of a mother-owned account. Except for six, all of his 273 bets on professional sports. He was reported for six bets on college basketball games, but he placed none on games involving Iowa State.

Now accused are 14 student-athletes from Iowa and Iowa State.

Early in August, charges were brought against three student-athletes from Iowa, including the team's starting point guard in basketball Ahron Ulis, catcher Gehrig Christensen in baseball, and kicker Aaron Blom in football.

Hunter Dekkers, the starting quarterback for Iowa State, was charged with wagering on a football game in which he did not participate. Early in August, charges were also brought against Paniro Johnson, the Big 12 champion wrestler, Eyioma Uwazurike, and Dodge Sauser.

''Since learning about possible NCAA eligibility problems relating to sports betting by several of our student-athletes back in May, Iowa State University has been actively working to address these issues with the involved student-athletes, and that process is still ongoing. "We will continue to support our student-athletes as our compliance staff works with the NCAA to resolve issues pertaining to their upcoming athletic eligibility."

Denver Broncos selected Uwazurike in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was a standout defensive lineman while attending Iowa State. Prior to the NFL suspending him for betting on league games during his rookie season, he was anticipated to compete for a starting position this season in Denver. Ten players have been suspended since April for breaking the NFL's gambling policy.
